Maryland DNR has announced regulations for the spring catch & release fishing:

The regulation will place the following restrictions on recreational angling in all open striped bass catch and release areas during the period of March 1st through the 3rd Friday of April.

  • Prohibits the use of stinger hooks;
  • Requires barbless hooks to be used when trolling;
  • Requires the use of circle hooks or J hooks with a gap of less than ½” when using bait; and
  • Restricts boats to the use of no more than six lines when trolling, regardless of the number of individuals on board the vessel.

The Department will also pursue a non-regulatory strategy of increasing outreach and education to promote ethical catch and release fishing practices.
